Training. Purpose.

Good Morning. Wednesday, June 18th, 2025.

Firefighter Success Podcast #006 with John Spera.

Hit a nail on my head today. Training. Purpose and why.

People set a fitness goal, health goal, something goal, January 1st goal, resolution. But what is the ultimate reason for setting that goal? What’s the purpose behind it? Hammer & nail in my head today.

My workout regimen used to be to maintain durability and some body armor because I knew I was going to be playing hockey with a bunch of 30-year-olds who were going to kick my ass if I wasn’t keeping up. Have I now, switching to jiu-jitsu and a different type of fitness to go along with it, a different type of strength, but not necessarily, or at least my perception has been, wrongfully so, that the body armor needs are different. That should be where I change things.

Purpose. What is the purpose of me going down in the basement and training? What is the purpose of carrying sandbags? What is the purpose of squatting? I need to reshape and redefine that purpose because I am 58. I’m in a gym and a dojo with a bunch of young, strong hard chargers. I don’t want to continue to be the nail. I don’t want to get torn up. I need to take care of the machine. I need to maintain flexibility. I need body armor to go along with it so that I can keep doing what I’m doing for as long as I can possibly do it.

Repurpose my reason for working out. Build it. Build a heavier duty machine that can survive in the dojo for a long time.

Get it done.
