The Morning Ruck

2.2 miles. 35 pounds. By any standard, it’s a simple walk outside.

For me, and I’m sure anybody else who gets up at 0530 to get some physical work in, it’s the discipline.

The routine.

The system.

It’s getting up and doing something that sometimes you don’t want to do. It’s priming the pump. It’s time to sit in your thoughts. No text messages. No distractions.

In the early morning, the world problems aren’t solved, they’re contemplated. Thoughts are developed. Opinions formed. Action items confirmed.

It’s just me. Outside. A few cars passing me on 135th St., probably wondering, who’s the nut job walking around with a camouflage backpack with a GoPro in his hand? Weirdo.

No matter. Everyone is self-absorbed. Nobody gives more than 2 seconds worth of thought to passing by someone on the sidewalk.

This is my time in the morning. Solitude. Sweat. Unfettered mind.

If you’re asking yourself if you should try it – You know my answer, I’m sure….
