On Fitness, Standards & Social Media Shifts

I write a lot. A LOT.

It dawned on me this weekend, as I posted a couple of comments & responses to some people’s sites, that I spend quite a bit of time engaging. A LOT of time.

I’m never one to simply type something up in haste to hit “Send” as quickly as I can. I spend time. My writing is a reflection of me and my thoughts. Being articulate takes some level of effort – At least for me it does.

I talk and read about the art of writing quite often. About being brief (thank you, Joe McCormick). I want to be proud of what I write, no matter if it’s a post here on the site, or a comment or response to someone on the web, or in a chat, no matter – My writing, my words, how I convey my thoughts is a reflection. And when I’m in the town square, I try to chose my words well. I try…

Anyway, I’m going to try to scrape comments as I post them. I’ve invested my time in being thoughtful & purposeful – They deserve to be shared here with my crew. With context, of course…

Here’s a couple from this past weekend:

On Fitness Standards

I was never in the service. I wish I was. If I was my 18-year old self again, I would sign up today.

Listening to the excerpts of Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has me fired up.

Momentum shifts take time. We got where we are now, with the softening of society, bubble-wrapping our kids, striving for ease & comfort, over the course of the last couple of decades.

I am so very hopeful that we’re going to see a shift back, where fitness, health, strength, self-confidence, working hard, mental toughness, self-reliance, etc. become normal again.

It’s going to take bold voices like Hegseth & RFK Jr.’s and others to start to turn the ship. Take politics out of the mix, and let’s have a common sense conversation. I think lots of people truly want those qualities to be valued again.

There will always be some in the town square who will be offended and push back, even though they know what they need to do to for their health and longevity.

I’m hopeful that things are starting to turn. And the conversation, this topic, forces me to look within first. Am I meeting The Standards? My Standards? Standards for my work? My EMA activities? My BJJ? This is a wake-up call for anyone who can also see it: Revisit my SOP’s and my standards. Then Move Out.

On My Stepping Away from Social Media

This is a great thread from Marion Abrams:

I had posted 2 comments in Marion’s thread:

I think we’re all starting to wise up and see socials changing. I’m not enjoying my time on LinkedIn like I used to now that every 3rd post in my scroll is either an ad or from something that I’m not interested in…

and…

The exchange everyone is having in your last couple of posts is what I enjoy – Like minds having engaging, thoughtful conversations about something that I’m interested in.

Your work sparks your community – It’s people hanging out in a virtual coffee shop or at a fire station kitchen table, sharing what they know & think with people who have similar interests.

I think that, so long as our creative efforts satisfy our inner artist first, we’re investing our time with a purpose. We hope the people in our circles see the value of the effort and are willing to reciprocate it by engaging, conversing & sharing it with their circles – It’s how I came to “meet” you, through Joe De Sena & Zach Even – Esh – Cool people hanging out with cool people!!

I’m not willing to spend my time making something, hoping that it “goes viral:” That’s what lottery tickets are for, and the odds of winning are roughly the same….

I’m am REALLY interested to see what the next generation of connection platform(s) looks like, where this shift we’re all chatting about in this thread takes us. Right now, Substack has been filling some of that void for me in the writing medium, I’m curious to see where video content goes next…
