We might take the math skills that we have as engineers and construction professionals for granted. The course I teach has a math/geometry prerequisite requirement, however, many of the students haven’t touched sin/cos/tan or the Pythagorean Theorem since high school. Historically, I’ve had to take an inordinate amount of time getting students “caught up” on their math skills, which of course, defeats the purpose of having a prerequisite….
But I might have stumbled into a solution. James A. Coan wrote a book called “ Math for the Surveyor.” It’s downloadable from the Geomatics Canada website. Jim was an instructor at Renton Technical College teaching land surveying, as well as a contributor to Mentoring Mondays, a great website & YouTube channel dedicated to surveying.
Since we all have members of our crew who occasionally find themselves needing to calculate a complex area or manually run a curve calculation, this is a great resource worth sharing!
